explanation
Equipped with a newly developed pulse 8D/A converter, the ES series CD player is designed
with high sound quality.
The D/A converter uses a high-density linear converter system, which is equipped with a
45-bit noise-shaping digital filter and a pulsed D/A converter.
The pulsed D/A converter consists of one current source and one electronic switch, and
expresses the musical waveform by switching two values, 0 and 1, at high speed. As a result,
the amplitude level is always constant and the PLM (Pulse-Length Modulation) wave is output
with only the time axis. Then, by passing a low-pass filter, unnecessary high-frequency
noise outside the audio band is removed and a music waveform is obtained.
In addition, the pulsed D/A converter has a 64x oversampling and Sony to reduce quantization
noise in the audible band up to 20kHz. It is equipped with a multi-stage noise shaping operation
that uses the Extended Noise Shaping method. In oversampling, quantization noise in
the audible band is reduced by increasing the sampling frequency. In addition, in noise shaping,
when the number of bits is reduced, the requantization error is fed back to the input side to
reduce quantization noise in the audible band. These technologies ensure a high dynamic
range.
The pulsed D/A converter operates at 45 megapulses per second, fundamentally eliminating
differential nonlinear distortion, glitches, and zero-crossing distortion that were difficult with
conventional methods.
The newly developed pulse D/A converter has a single 4D/A output that outputs the signals
of each LR, both positive and reversed.
The ES series is equipped in a complementary mode with 8D/A output with two pulsed D/A
converters. Complementary mode is a differential synthesis of two pulsed D/A converters
modulated so that they are complementary to each other, which has the effect of canceling out
harmonic distortion and improving distortion. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio is increased
by doubling the output current value.
In order to take advantage of the performance of the pulsed D/A converter in the high-density
linear converter system, a 45-bit noise-shaping digital filter is installed in the front stage.
In this circuit, a high dynamic range is ensured by performing high-precision oversampling
calculations and first-order noise shaping operations on the calculation results.
To eliminate jitter problems, it is equipped with a direct digital sync.
In addition, in this method, the master clock is formed on the same chip as the pulsed D/A
converter, and jitter removal is performed immediately before the electronic switch, which is
the final stage of the pulsed D/A converter, thereby eliminating the occurrence of jitter in principle.
The analog low-pass filter uses a GIC low-pass filter in which passive elements such as
capacitors and coils do not enter series.
By incorporating an RF amplifier in the pickup section, low noise and high stabilization
are achieved.
The digital signal processing LSI uses the fourth-generation LSI for Sony CD players, and
the RAM that was previously external has been increased to 32 kbits and built-in, and a strict
six-element error correction system is used to improve the accuracy of signal processing
capabilities.
The drive circuit of the optical pickup adopts a newly designed fine drive.
In this circuit, the single-drive circuit, which was previously single-sided, is separated from the
ground by using a balanced push-pull drive circuit with a ± two-power supply system, eliminating
the mixing of noise current into the power supply line and realizing a cleaner optical pickup drive.
The servo circuit is equipped with an S Servo III that works for out-of-band noise and an
Advanced TS Servo that works within the servo band.
In the S Servo III, the high-frequency noise component of the servo current is removed by
a low-pass filter to supply a smooth servo current. This stabilizes the power supply from
the power supply and prevents adverse effects on sound quality.
The Advanced TS servo reduces the current required for servo operation by nearly 10 dB, and
a newly developed vibration damping mechanism is installed in the actuator part of the optical
pickup to further enhance the quietness of the optical system.
The drive servo circuit that controls the rotation of the disc is equipped with a digital CLV servo.
The digital CLV servo detects the rotation of the spindle motor and controls it with 10-bit
resolution. As a result, accurate linear velocities are maintained regardless of the inner and
outer circumferences of the disc. It also detects the difference in inertial mass between 12 cm
CD and 8 cm CD discs to make a more appropriate drive.
In order to prevent deterioration of trace accuracy due to vibration and resonance, a G-base
unit is used as the base of the optical system mechanism.
The G-base unit is made of calcium carbonate, which has the same composition as marble, and
is reinforced with glass fiber in addition to a special resin, which reduces the degree of co-
advancing sharpness, reduces the influence of external vibrations, and obtains high rigidity.
The opening in the front panel where the tray is housed is equipped with an acoustic shield
and a special rubber damper is provided to improve airtightness and reduce the effects of
air vibrations entering the chassis.
In addition, the tray itself uses a high-rigidity G-tray made of the same material as the G-base
unit to prevent unwanted vibrations from being transmitted to the disc.
The FB chassis is used for the chassis structure, and the frame that surrounds the outer
perimeter and the beams that pass the front and rear front and rear firmly joint the entire chassis
to achieve a vibration-resistant structure. In addition, the inside of the chassis of the
CDP-X555ES is copper-plated to make it non-magnetic.
The legs are equipped with fine ceramic insulators.
The power supply unit has a two-transformer configuration, and the digital servo unit and the
audio unit are independently powered. In addition, a power supply circuit is provided for the
D/A converter section to fundamentally eliminate interference through the power supply.
In addition, in order not to transmit the vibration of the transformer mechanically, rubber
dampers are used in four places to float the transformer.
Consideration has also been given to the circuit board configuration, and interference from the
digital part to the analog part is suppressed by a separate seat configuration that separates the
digital circuit and the audio circuit board.
In addition, the audio circuit board uses a high-strength glass epoxy ES substrate that prevents
sound quality deterioration due to vibration in the board and electrostatic stray capacitance.
The front panel is made of aluminum panels, and the sides are equipped with side woods.
It is equipped with a custom edit function and has 9 functions: Peak Search, Time Edit, Just
Edit, Program Edit, Multi-Disc Program, Link Edit, Time Fade, Variable Fade, and Manual Fader.
Peak Search searches all songs at high speed and plays them repeatedly for about 4 seconds before and after the highest volume level.
TimeEdit allows you to efficiently edit the A and B sides of tape recording.
First of all, if you want to edit according to the length of the tape to be used, set the length of
the tape with the TIME SET button or the AMS button (you can also set the number of
seconds with the direct key), and when you press the edit button, you can program the
song in order from the first song as the A-side, and when you hit the song that runs out of time,
select the longest song that fits within the time. After that, press the edit button to edit the B-side
in the same way.
Also, if you select a half disc with the AMS button and edit it, the songs will be sorted so that the
A and B sides of the tape are about the same length without changing the song order.
Just Edit is an evolution of Time Edit, which automatically finds and programs the closest
song combination at a given time.
As with Time Edit, you can set the A and B sides at the same time.
In Program Edit, you can manually edit your favorite songs in any order.
You can program your favorite songs in the order you like while checking the accumulation
time with the AMS key or direct key. If you turn on autospace at this time, you can add 3 seconds
of blanks to the performance time of each song and edit it. When you press the pause button,
you can program the A side, and then the B side.
Multi-disc programs allow you to edit across multiple discs.
When you program in program mode and open the tray, the "MULTI PGM" message will
appear and you will automatically switch to the multi-disc program. The program can be up to
6 discs (24 songs). You can also program poses along the way.
LinkEdit allows you to add songs to tapes left over from Time Edit or Just Edit.
When all songs are programmed and there is room for a song within the editing time, the
track number and LINK display of the song to be entered will flash, and you can add a song
by selecting from the songs with the flashing track number again.
LinkEdit can also be used to swap discs and continue editing.
Time fade allows you to fade out at a specified time. The time setting is TIME Use the SET
button or the AMS button.
You can set the time to fade in and out in 1-second increments from 2 seconds to 10 seconds
by variable fade.
With manual faders, you can fade in and out at your favorite point.
It is equipped with a custom file function, and six functions are available: Disk Memo,
Custom Index, Program/Delete Bank, Level File, Last Mode Memory, and File Recall.
Disk memos can record messages of up to 10 characters per disc. The number of characters
that can be used is 78 characters, including alphanumeric characters, special symbols, and blanks.
With a custom index, you can index your own index on disk wherever you want in the index.
Sets can be made up to 10 points per disc and can be fine-tuned in approximately ±0.15
second steps.
In the Program/Delete Bank, you can record program performances and delete play settings for
99 songs.
The level file feature allows you to set different playback levels for different discs.
You can set the line-out/headphone volume to your preferred volume by simply pressing the
level file button, and when you insert the same disc, it will automatically set to the memorized
level.
In the last mode memory, you can remember the play mode and fade time that were set just
before ejecting the disc with the custom file, and that mode is automatically called when the
same disc is inserted.
With file recall, you can check what kind of files were included.
This function can be activated without a disc inserted, and unnecessary files can be erased
on the fly.
It is equipped with a delete play function, which allows you to play continuously while leaving
only the songs you want to listen to. If you delete an unwanted song in shuffle mode and then
switch to continue mode to play, it will skip that song and play the next song.
